…Our Local Community

Food Pantry

Our Savior’s Food Pantry is available to help those in need within our congregation and the community.  Food is distributed on Tuesday from 9am to 11am and Thursday from 1pm to 3pm.  Our Savior’s Lutheran Church’s Food Pantry served 2500 families in 2015!  The pantry is open to everyone regardless of where you live.  An ID with your picture and your current address is all that is required to get food.  Holiday meats are distributed for Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. Bread is donated randomly and is available to anyone throughout the week or weekend.

We also have a Produce Mobile (virtually a farmer’s market on wheels providing fresh fruits and vegetables) on the second Wednesday of every other month from 10:15am until noon.  The Produce Mobile has served an average of 125 households each occurance!  Help is needed to unload the delivery truck on the 1st and 3rd  Monday of each month from 10:45 am until 12 Noon.  Help is also needed to clean up after the Produce Mobile visits 11:30am -12:30 pm on: February 10, April 13, June 8, August 10, October 12, and December 14, 2016.

Yarn Over Missions

A group of knitters and crocheters of all ages, meets the third Saturday of each month at 10:30am in Peter’s Hall. We knit/crochet hats, gloves, scarves, mittens, prayer shawls, sweaters, socks, fidget bears and twiddle muffs which are distributed to World Vision, Operation Gratitude, VITAS Healthcare, The Crisis Center for South Suburbia, The Southside Pregnancy Center, P.A.D.S., and others in need. 2,281 items were made and given in 2016!   We accept yarn, knitting needles, crochet hooks and monetary donations (used to purchase Lion Brand Homespun yarn for prayer shawls).  We do not sell any of our items. Our meetings are very uplifting and inspiring as we work together each month. We have several persons who are unable to attend meetings but knit/crochet items and donate them to us. Thoughts and patterns are exchanged as well as helpful hints while each of the women work on the project of their choice. For those who desire to learn to knit and crochet – we will happily share our talents.  If you can hand-stitch, you can help create prayer patches. The demand is great so please share your skill and time.

Manna Gift Card Ministry

Since this ministry began in 2007, Our Savior’s has purchased approximately 19,000 gift cards and gifted $30,555 to help people all over the world! Each month we have an opportunity to purchase gift cards at face value for businesses we all regularly frequent and spend money.  Manna allows us to earn cash back, which is given to a different local, national or global mission.   This year will will be helping Hearts in Motion, Crisis Center for South Suburbia, Feed My Starving Children, ELCA Malaria Fund, Lutheran Outdoor Ministry Center, Living Waters Lutheran Church, Our Savior’s Assistance Fund, Yarn Over Missions, Reclaim 13, Wellness House, and Lutheran World Relief.

To purchase gift cards, simply fill out an order form (located on the wall in the narthex, next to the office door). Indicate cards desired and enclose a check made payable to:  Our Savior’s Church. Place in an envelope and drop in the secure Manna Drop Box (on the wall in the narthex, next to the order forms). Order due dates are typically the 2nd Sunday of the month by noon.
